Safo is a rural municipality in the Department Madarounfa in Niger.

Geography

Safo is in the big landscape Sudan and is bordered to the southwest by the neighboring state of Nigeria. The neighboring communities in Niger are Tibiri the northwest, Sarkin Yamma in the north, Maradi in the northeast, Djiratawa in the east, in the southeast Madarounfa and Gabi in the south. The municipality is divided into 40 administrative villages, a traditional village, 16 hamlets and a warehouse. The main town of the rural community is the administrative village of Safo.

The average annual rainfall is 507 millimeters in Safo, the number of rainy days per year on average, 35 (measuring period 1995-2006). In the village there is the northern part of the 36,000 hectare nature reserve Forêt de Baban Rafi classée.

History

The French colonial administration set up in 1944 a canton in a Safo. 2002 emerged the rural community Safo as part of a nationwide administrative reform from the Canton Safo.

Population

At the 2001 census Safo had 53 631 inhabitants. For the year 2010 72.472 inhabitants were calculated. Safo is a traditional center of Azna.

Economy and infrastructure

The municipality is located in that narrow zone along the border with Nigeria, ranging from Tounouga in the west to the east Malawa and operated in irrigated crop production for cash crops.
