Sagrado

Sagrado (full name: Sagrado d' Isonzo; Sagrat on Friulian; Zagraj in Slovenian ) is a municipality with 2213 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the Province of Gorizia in the Italian region Friuli- Venezia Giulia.

Geography

Sagrado is located on the left bank of the river Isonzo at the foot of Monte San Michele on the Karst and includes four districts: Peteano, Poggio Terza Armata (obsolete: Sdraussina / Sdraučina ), San Martino del Carso ( Slow VRK ), Stazione Gradisca - San Martino. Neighboring municipalities are Doberdò del Lago, Farra d' Isonzo, Fogliano Redipuglia, Gradisca d' Isonzo and Savogna d' Isonzo.

History

The Monte San Michele ( 275 m asl ) was the scene of bloody battles Isonzo between Italy and Austria - Hungary during the First World War. On August 7, 1916, the Italian troops succeeded after repeated attempts to take the mountain. The blown-up in the karst rocks casemates are still available and can be visited, so the Gen. Lukacich Cave, and Schoenburg tunnel and the Galleria della III Armata. The hamlet of Poggio Terza Armata ( ' base 3rd Army ') lies to the east of the Sacred in a narrow flat strip between the Isonzo and the Carso below the Monte San Michele. It was renamed during the Fascist period to commemorate the battles of the Isonzo lying here during the headquarters of the Italian 3rd Army.

San Martino del Carso is a village on the Karst plateau, which was heavily damaged during the fighting. The church was completely destroyed in 1925 rebuilt in the same place.

Trivia

The Monte San Michele is mentioned by name in the poem ' Sono una creatura ' of the Italian poet Giuseppe Ungaretti, who fought here as a soldier. Another poem of his is named after the site 'San Martino del Carso '.

With the Städen Branik in Slovenia and in Hungary Győrság is twinned. There is also a partnership with the community Poggersdorf in Carinthia.
