Salvatore Pappalardo

Salvatore Cardinal Pappalardo ( born September 23, 1918 in Villafranca sicula, Agrigento Province, Italy, † December 10, 2006 in Palermo) was Roman Catholic Archbishop of Palermo.

Life

Salvatore Pappalardo occurred in 1936 in the Pontifical Roman Seminary and studied the subjects of philosophy and Catholic theology. After receiving the priesthood on April 12, 1941, he continued his studies at the Pontifical Lateran University and earned a year later a doctorate in law. Subsequently, he worked as a pastor before joining in 1947 the diplomatic service of the Vatican and there worked in the Department of Special Tasks of the Church. From 1959 to 1965 he lectured Church diplomacy and law, and was pastor in two parishes of Rome.

On December 7, 1965 Pope Paul VI appointed him. Titular Archbishop of Miletus and Apostolic Pro- Nuncio to Indonesia. He received his episcopal consecration on January 16, 1966 Amleto Giovanni Cardinal Cicognani. Paul VI appointed him in 1969. President of the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy in Rome and he transferred in 1970 the management of the Archdiocese of Palermo. This important diocese until he stood before his retirement in retirement in April 1996. On March 5, 1973, he was accepted as a cardinal priest with the titular church of Santa Maria dei Siciliani Odigitria in the College of Cardinals. Cardinal Pappalardo took part in the August and on Oktoberkonklave 1978. At the conclave of 2005 due to his age, he took no further part. The following year he died at the age of 88 years in Palermo.

Became internationally known Pappalardo, since he in his tenure as Archbishop of Palermo in intrepid sermons turned against the Mafia and was the first to break the wall of silence.

He was up to his death, Grand Prior of the Lieutenancy of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sicily grave in Jerusalem.
