Samaná Province

Samaná is a province in the north- east of the Dominican Republic and includes the eponymous peninsula.

Provincial capital is the city of the same name also Samana (Santa Barbara de Samana ) with about 40,000 inhabitants.

There are beaches that are similar with their dense tropical vegetation and coconut trees that date back to the sea, the beaches of the South Pacific on the north side of the peninsula.

The largest town next to Santa Barbara de Samana Las Terrenas is, with about 13,000 inhabitants on the beach and equipped with many hotels. Overall, there is far less operation than in the other tourist towns like Punta Cana or Puerto Plata. Near here, in " El Portillo ", there is a small airfield, can reach the capital Santo Domingo in about 50 minutes from the airport taxis. In November 2006 opened the new international airport El Catey. With a car trip from Santo Domingo to Samana on the newly built highway takes about two and a half hours. A 2012 completed coastal road connecting El Catey to Las Terrenas and shortened the journey time is now 25 minutes.

In the Bay of Samaná you can watch from December to March, humpback whales, who come there to mate. The Bay of Samana, which is 14 km wide, you can cross between the city of Samana and Sabana de la mar in a ferry that this takes an hour and twice a day (start of each side 8:00 to 15:00 clock ) operates and also entrains small motorcycles. In addition, you can take whale watching tours in rented boats.

In Samana it rains much more frequently than in all other areas of the Dominican Republic.
