Sambalpur ( Oriya: ସମ୍ବଲପୁର ) is a town in the Indian state of Odisha. It is the administrative seat of the district of Sambalpur. In Sambalpur approximately 180,000 inhabitants ( 2011 census ).

History

In the middle of the 13th century created Balarama Deva, the younger brother of Narasingha Deva, a private UK Sambalpur and thus established the Chauhan rule in the area. His son, Balabhadra Deva conquered the area around Sonepur. Balabhadra Deva Deva's successor Madhukara transformed the area around Sonapur into a vassal state in order and gave it to his second son Madan Gopal, who ruled it from 1640 as a separate princely state. In April 1800, the princely state of Sambalpur was conquered by Marathenreich. Just four years later, on January 2, 1804, the British captured Sambalpur who had the rule until the independence of India.

Sambalpur is the seat of the Diocese of Sambalpur.

Traffic

Sambalpur is located on the east bank of the river Mahanadi. The city is located on National Highway NH 6 and is the starting point of NH 42 Cuttack. In addition, performs a highway of Rourkela according to Sonepur by Sambalpur. By train there are connections to Bhubaneswar and Jharsuguda Titlagarh as well as in the north to Bilaspur and Rourkela.
