Samuel S. Bowne

Samuel Smith Bowne (* April 11, 1800 in New Rochelle, New York, † July 9, 1865 in Morris, New York) was an American lawyer and politician. Between 1841 and 1843 he represented the State of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Samuel Smith Bowne was born in the early 19th century in New Rochelle in Westchester County. The family moved to Otsego County and settled in Morris. There he attended community schools. He then worked in agriculture. In 1825 he moved to Laurens. He studied law. After receiving his license to practice law in 1832, he began practicing in Laurens. Then he moved to Cooperstown. In 1834 he sat in the New York State Assembly. Politically, he was a member of the Democratic Party.

In the congressional elections of 1840 for the 27th Congress Bowne was in the 19th electoral district of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of John Holmes Prentiss on March 4, 1841. Since he gave up for reelection in 1842, he retired after the March 3, 1843 out of the Congress.

He moved to Rochester in 1846, where he pursued his activities as a lawyer. Between 1851 and 1855 he was a judge in Otsego County. He then practiced as a lawyer again. On July 9, 1865, he died on his farm in Morris and was then buried in the Friends Burying Ground. At the time of the Civil War was over for about two weeks.
