San Cristóbal Acasaguastlán is a 2,000 inhabitants counting place and a municipality in the department of El Progreso in Guatemala. It is located 101 km north-east of Guatemala City and 32 km north-east of Guastatoya on the north shore of the Río Motagua at 250 m height. Through the valley of the Motagua and also by San Cristóbal Acasaguastlán the important Atlantic Highway CA runs 9

The 124 km ² large municipality located in the far east of El Progreso. It extends between the Sierra de las Minas in the north and the valley of the Río Motagua in the south. It has a total of about 6,500 inhabitants, of whom the majority live in smaller rural settlements and villages, including Cruz del Valle, Estancia de la Virgen, Manzanotal, Piedras Blancas and San Luís Buena Vista.

Adjacent Municipalities are San Agustín Acasaguastlán the north and west, and El Jícaro in the south. In the east it borders on Usumatlán in the neighboring department of Zacapa.

In San Cristóbal Acasaguastlán there was the religious center Acatzavastlán. It had a great significance for the Maya ethnic groups that belonged politically to Copan and Quiriguá (probably Pocomam ). During the colonial period was the environment of Acasaguastlán from 1551 an administrative district of the same name ( Corregimiento de San Cristóbal Ancazabastlán ), then emerged from the two municipios of San Cristóbal and San Agustín Acasaguastlán Acasaguastlán. In both places worth seeing in the baroque colonial churches remember to Spanish rule.

San Cristóbal Acasaguastlán belonged with his then- rural community of El Jícaro to 1908 to Zacapa, then to the newly established Department of El Progreso. After its dissolution occurred from 1920 to 1934 back to Zacapa, since it is in El Progreso.
