San Sebastián de La Gomera is one of the settlements of the Guanches ( natives). In 1440 Hernán Peraza occupied the place where now stands the capital of the island, at the end of the Barranco de la Villa. He gave it the name of San Sebastián, probably due to the admiration that turned the Spanish population that saint.

The first buildings built before the conquest of the island was completed, the church Ermita de San Sebastián, which is now located outside the village core, the Casa de los Peraza, are on the property Pozo de la Aguada, the church of Iglesia de Nra. This was Hernán Peraza 1450 build to protect against the rebellious natives.

The capital of the island is developed from two directions, the part of the Casa de los Peraza and the Iglesia de la Asunción forth between which later Calle Real was built in the beginning of the Camino Real ( Royal Road ), the main road of the island.

Church

Hernán Peraza ( " El Viejo " ) probably built on an ancient, pre-Columbian settlement in a wild valley floor a hulking building as a chapel of brick and rubble. This place of worship, a fortress as the residence of the ruler and an initial path formed the starting point for all island connections (then by ship or boat) and ultimately the nucleus of the village. The chapel was then the final resting place of the son of the ruler, Guillén Peraza, and honor the praises of the Columbus fleet on the St. Mary, the Salve Marinera. End of the 15th century, so little after the departure of Columbus to America, the chapel was demolished and replaced by a new church. She received both qualitatively and quantitatively the finest amenities in the next fifty years. From this time, the ribbed vault made of red tuff and the facade dates. It is an important example of Gothic architecture in the Atlantic area in which fuses the design of the Spanish Catholic Monarchs with the Portuguese Manueline style.

Like the city, it happened also to the Church: Over time, it has been repeatedly damaged or destroyed by pirates. 1632 the clerk was instructed to build a chest for the church books in order to bring this fast in safety. Even he had to hold the rope and pulley willing to depend on the church bells quickly, to save them from the depredations of pirates.

Nevertheless, the church was temporarily neglected, the choir stalls served as firewood for the boilers of ships Flemish organ pipes were sold to the local blacksmith by weight, the altars sawed, kept the sacred images in lumber-rooms, etc.

Nevertheless, the church regained and rose to emerge from this era.
