Sandra Schmitt

Sandra Schmitt ( born April 26, 1981 in Mörfelden, † 11 November 2000 in Kaprun, Austria ) was a German freestyle skier. She was dedicated to the moguls and dual moguls mogul disciplines. Their greatest success was winning the dual moguls World Champion title in 1999.

Biography

From January 1997 Schmitt launched in the European Cup and established himself with a victory in their first participation at once at the top. Her debut in the Freestyle World Cup they had in Tignes on 5 December 1997; 10th place in the moguls competition at the same time she won her first World Cup points. With three other top - 10 finishes, she qualified for the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, where they scored the 9th Place. On January 16, 1999 she succeeded in Steamboat Springs, the first World Cup victory.

At the World Championship 1999 in Hasliberg Schmitt won the gold medal in the discipline Dual Moguls. She sat down in the final round against Norway's Kari Traa by. In the course of the World Cup season 1999/2000 she won four times, were added three more podium finishes. Both the Mogul as well as in the dual moguls discipline rating they won 3rd place in the overall World Cup rankings, it was enough for 5th place

A fatal accident ended Schmitt's sports career abruptly. She came on 11 November 2000, a fire broke out the glacier cable car in Kaprun killed, along with her parents and an alpine training group of the German Ski Association.
