Saône, Doubs

Saône is a commune in the French department Doubs in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Saône is located on 397 m, approximately 7 km east-southeast of the city of Besançon ( straight line ). The village is located in the western Jura, on the so-called first plateau on the eastern edge of the swamp Marais de Saône, between the heights of the Jura - edge range in the north and in the south of the Grand Mont.

The area of ​​20.55 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the western French Jura. The main part of the area is occupied by the wide first Jura plateau, which is on average 400 m. It forms a wide basin with no surface runoff. This sink is mainly consisted of meadow and arable land, and partly of wood. In the West Saône share in the Marais de Saône, which is supplied by several sources. Drained the marsh area on the intake hole of the Creux sous Roche on the southwestern outskirts of the village. History

Is first mentioned Saône in 1130 under the name sauna. Over time, the spelling on Sône ( 1249 ) and Sosne walked to the present Saône. Probably the name of Celtic origin and goes to the root words say ( holy ) and back onna (water). In the Middle Ages Saône belonged to the rule Montfaucon. Together with the Franche -Comté it came with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678 to France.

Population

With 3301 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) is one of the Saône medium-sized municipalities in the department of Doubs. Once the population has consistently had in the first half of the 20th century in the range of approximately 570 people, a striking population growth was recorded since the early 1950s. Since then, the population has more than quintupled. Outside the old town center, numerous new single-and multi -family houses were built.

Economy and infrastructure

Soane was until well into the 20th century a predominantly by agriculture (crops, orchards and livestock ) and forestry embossed village. Further road links exist with Montfaucon, Ornans, Mamirolle and Naisey. Saône has a station on the railway line from Besancon to La Chaux -de-Fonds. For the most part in the municipal area of the Saone, but closer to the village of La Vèze, is the airfield of Besancon La Vèze.

Attractions

The village church of Saône was completed in 1779; during the rectory from the time comes around 1700. In the village are farmhouses are preserved in the characteristic style of the Franche -Comté from the 17th to 19th centuries.
