Sassafras (Victoria)

Sassafras is an eastern suburb of Melbourne in the south of the Australian state of Victoria. The place is situated on the ridge line of the Dandenongs in about 500 m altitude, about 43 km from the city center of Melbourne. It belongs to the Local Government Area Yarra Ranges Shire. At the 2006 census Sassafras had 968 inhabitants. Just a few kilometers north of the village is the highest elevation in the Dandenongs, Mount Dandenong.

History

The area was named ( Atherosperma ) Sassafras Gully after the trees found there. In 1893 the land was made available to small farmers and a small settlement developed. The first post office was opened there on June 1, 1901, always said Sassafras Gully Post Office. Beginning of the 20th century increased tourism and the settlement grew with him.

Watercourses

Sassafras is located between the catchment areas of the Yarra River and Dandenong Creek. The Sassafras Creek is located east of the settlement, while tributaries of the Dandenong Creek are located north and west of the settlement. Both streams have important habitats, most of which belong to the Dandenong Ranges National Park.

The Sassafras Creek empties into the Woori Yallock Creek, which, in turn flows at the Warramate Nature Conservation Reserve, a national reserve in the Yarra River. The floodplain of the Sassafras Creek is almost entirely public reason that belongs to the National Park.
