Satbayev (city)

Sätbajew ( Kazakh Сәтбаев / Sätbajev; Russian Сатпаев / Satpajew ) is a city in the province of Karaganda in Kazakhstan. It was founded in 1954 under the name of Nikolski. In honor of Qanysch Îmantajuly Sätbajew the city was renamed in 1990 in Sätbajew.

Geographical Location

The city is located in the Karaganda area only about seven kilometers from Schesqasghan. The city is located about 550 kilometers west of the provincial capital of Karaganda and 760 kilometers southwest of the capital, Astana.

Population

Sätbajew has 71 226 inhabitants (as of April 2010). 59.7 percent of the population are Kazakhs, 23.6 percent are Russians and 16.7 percent are of other descent.

History

The town was founded in 1954 as a workers' settlement Nikolski ( Никольский ). 1973 was the place granted town rights and was therefore no longer managing the nearby town Schesqasghan. The city was renamed in 1990 in honor of the geologist Qanysch Îmantajuly Sätbajew.

Culture and sights

Structures

The Russian Orthodox Church of St. Nicholas and the mosque which also runs an Islamic school, out of the company Kazakhmys in order. The two buildings face each other in the city center.

Sports

In the city the hockey team HK Kasachmys is located. The football team FK Kasachmys played 2009 in the highest Kazakh league.

In the city center there is a sports complex, which includes an ice rink, a swimming pool, an indoor soccer field and some gyms.

Economy

Especially mining characterizes the city Sätbajew. The in many tunnels ( underground mining ) and open pit ore produced are processed in the nearby town of Schesqasghan to copper and other nonferrous metals.
