The black man in Buchet - Halenfeld in Rhineland-Palatinate district of Bitburg -Prüm is with 697.8 meters above sea level. NHN after a nearby peak with 699.1 meters high the second highest elevation in the Schneifel.

Near the summit the transmitter is located Schnee Eifel. The area is a well-developed hiking area and the largest winter sports area in Rhineland- Palatinate.

Name origin

The name Black man has nothing to do with the bogeyman figure, the black man, but with the black faces of the miners in the degradation of lead ore in the mine of Bleialf. Earlier, the summit " Kerschgeroth " was called, which is probably derived from the clearing of the heavily wooded area.

Geography

Location

The black man is in the far west of the Eifel, the Schnee Eifel, near the border with Belgium in the High Fens -Eifel. Its summit rises about between the city of Prüm in the southeast as well as the communities Bleialf in West southwest and Ormont in the northeast, about 3 km west of Halenfeld (local part from Buchet ), and about 3.8 km (each air line) west-northwest of Wascheid (part of Gondenbrett ).

Near the summit is the Tranchotstein, which is designated as a natural monument.

Nature Spatial allocation and reserve

The black man belongs in the main physiographic unit group Westeifel (No. 28) and in the main unit Western High Eifel (281 ) for subunit Schneifelrücken ( 281.0 ).

On the black man lying parts of the Fauna- Flora-Habitat area Schneifel ( FFH-Nr. 5704-301; 36.65 km ² ).

Mountain height and peak

Just 1.5 kilometers (direct distance) north-east from the summit ( 697.8 m) of the Black man lies about 150 m north-northeast of the log cabin restaurant Zum Schwarzen Mann ( ⊙ 50.26456.3740277777778 ) as the highest peak of the Schneifel and the third highest of the Eifel an unnamed notified body with 699.1 m ( ⊙ 50.2658888888896.3747777777778 ) height.

Flora and Fauna

Both the Schneifel and the black man are mostly covered with pines. There are still rare plant and animal species such as the wild cat.

Transmitter Schnee Eifel

Approximately 250 meters south-southwest from the summit of the Black man is the most visible of the radio tower transmitter Schnee Eifel. Winter sports area

Transport and Hiking

About the summit of the Black man's country road 20, which crosses the main road 265 to the northeast and leads beyond the summit to the southwest after fire Scheid runs.
