The main railway station in located in the district Paul City, northwest of the city center of Mecklenburg- Vorpommern Schwerin. The station is designed as a through station has four tracks and two platforms, as well as a drive-through track west of the fourth track. Currently, the station is used daily by about 12,000 travelers.

Building

The station building was built in the years 1889/90 to a design by E. Möller representation in the style of the period using lighter bricks. The main hall is connected by lower intermediate links with two Eckpavillions. The entrance hall was built in 1927 lowered. In the lobby are next to a tourist center of the Deutsche Bahn some shops (bakeries, etc.). A pedestrian tunnel leads from the lobby to the two island platforms with four platform tracks. On the opposite side of the station tunnel has two staircase entrances and an elevator that lead to the street to the train station, from where is the place of freedom to achieve. Previously served a separate pedestrian underpass this connection function. This was, however, due to lack of elevators not accessible and was filled.

At the station forecourt, the decorative fountains rescue in distress is from 1910, with bronze sculptures by Hugo Berwald. The fountain was originally to 1927 on the Schwerin market. The station forecourt is framed by other transport facilities, Intercity Hotel (built in 1972 as the Hotel Stadt Schwerin ) and residential buildings, four of which according to plans Georg Adolph Demmlers 1847 received a uniform facade.

History

Schwerin received its first railway connection in 1847 with the railway line to Hagenow. These were the oldest railway in Mecklenburg, which established a connection to the Hamburg-Berlin line. The line to Wismar in 1848, which completed after Rostock bath small 1850. In 1888 followed connections to Crivitz (1899 extended until Parchim ) and Ludwig Lust, 1898, the line was opened after Rehna.

Between 1889 and 1890 the current station building was built on the site of the previous building from 1847. This building has since remained fairly consistent in appearance. In the 1920s, the station tunnel was built to allow safe access to the platforms.

The name Grunthalplatz, as the name of the station forecourt is based on a tragic event. This was shortly before the end of World War II Marianne Grunthal which were made a facilitating statement to the news of Hitler's death, hanged by SS guards at a lamppost. On the mast, a memorial plaque was placed later.

After three and a half years of modernization of the railway station was officially re-opened in December 2005. The according to the track around 40 million euros expensive measures which are a part of the road project German Unit No. 1, were included the renovation of four km tracks, a bridge, platforms with canopies and modernization work in the building and in the subways, with emphasis on the barrier-free access for wheelchair users was laid. Since 2005, the tunnel leads to the access to the tracks to the rear former Reichsbahn. The adjacent pedestrian tunnel was closed simultaneously. A recently built Electronic Interlocking has since been controlled by the operations center of Berlin- Pankow. Our extended to 370 meters platform to platform 3 and 4 the time required for intercity and Euro City trains length has been reached. Until April 2006 originated in the entrance hall of the station and the tunnel still retail space.

Parallel to the work was provided by the city for a renewal of parts of the Grunthalplatzes. The bus station and the tram stop in front of the building were upgraded structurally. This 1.2 million euro expensive measures were funded with 850,000 euros. In planning are still working on Fountain Square and the railway station, drive at Intercity Hotel. In particular, the Federal Garden Show 2009, the station should give the visitors a good first impression of the city.

On 18 September 2008 elected the Pro-Rail Alliance the main railway station in the " Station of the Year 2008" in the category " cities under 100,000 population ."

Transport links

The main railway station in located in the Roadmap 2014 on the course book sections 100 (Hamburg -Rostock ), 152 ( Rehna - Parchim ) and 202 ( Wismar - Cottbus ).

Here, the train station by both intercity trains of the DB long-distance traffic, as well as local trains of DB Regio West and the East German Railways ( OE) is operated.

Long-distance traffic

Off the clock connections connect individual trains Schwerin with:

  • Bergen auf Rügen, Binz, Greifswald (IC 26, IC 30 )
  • Heringsdorf (IC 30)

Regional Transport

The lines RE 1, RE 2 and RE 7 run every two hours. On the RE 1, there are individual amplifier units. The lines RE 2 and RE 7 overlap between Wismar and Ludwig pleasure to an approximate hourly. The OE runs between Gadebusch and Parchim every hour.

Access to bus and tram

On the Grunthalplatz on the east side of the station is on the tram and Bus Stop Following intra- urban transport. In addition to the tram line 1 and bus lines 5, 7, 8, 10, 11 and 19 of the transport Schwerin GmbH stop at bus platforms specifically for this purpose existing buses with buses from the surrounding area links and long-distance bus ( inter alia to Berlin ). Over a short walk is a connection to the west of the main station located Freedom Square, a node in city traffic, to keep the tram lines 2 and 4 and the bus routes 10, 11, 12, 14.

Former freight depot

The formerly independent freight station Schwerin north-west of the main station with its own signal box, private cargo loading and more goods shed has since graduated to a train station part of the main railway station and is now entirely abandoned. Some tracks are still used today as a station tracks for the parking of passenger trains. This applies double-deck push-pull trains of the Hanse -Express ( RE 1 ) and Diesel railcar of DB Class 628

For reuse of the decommissioned site an urban planning competition was held. It provides for the development of one-and two -family homes and townhouses. The freight handling system and the switchboard are to be retained and used again.

Bahnbetriebswerk Schwerin

In the former depot ( Bw Schwerin ), which is adjacent to the west directly to the main train station, now the Mecklenburg Railway and Technology Museum is housed with an extensive collection of museum vehicles ( locomotives, diesel locomotives, passenger carriages, freight wagons, narrow gauge railway cars).
