Robert Scott " Wino " Weinrich ( born September 28, 1961 in Maryland, USA ) is an American doom metal musician who became famous with bands like The Obsessed, Saint Vitus, Spirit Caravan, Place of Skulls, or The Hidden Hand.

Life

Scott " Wino " Weinrich learned to play the guitar during his high school days. In 1977 he founded The Obsessed, where he not only took over the post of guitarists, but also the singer and the songwriter. The band released two demos and was represented on the compilation Metal Massacre VI by Metal Blade Records with the song Concrete Cancer.

As Saint Vitus in 1986 their singer Scott Reagers had to replace, Weinrich took his place. With them he played a 1986 Born Too Late. But in 1990, after the albums Mournful Cries ( 1988) and V ( 1989) Wino left the band due to a dispute with band leader Dave Chandler.

Then reformed Wino The Obsessed and initially published them with the LP The Obsessed, a compilation of old material from the early eighties. It was followed by two more albums, two singles and a documentary video until The Obsessed finally disbanded in 1995 due to lack of media coverage and the poor sales related.

After Wino fell into severe depression and lived on the streets. Finally, he returned in 1996 to Maryland back (he had his home in 1980 in the direction of leave California ) and was there by his old companion Gary Isom (drums) and Dave Sherman (bass ) coaxed a jam session. A short time later, the trio founded the band Shine, which renamed itself during the recording of their first album to Spirit Caravan (after a song by The Obsessed ).

The band released two albums and various contributions to samplers and compilations. Spirit Caravan broke up in 2002 because of the financial situation of the band members. Wino founded after a brief stint at Place of Skulls his new band The Hidden Hand. However, this band lasted only until 2007, because Wino looked for unfair business practices of its partners no future for the band, although published in five years, three successful albums and several tours were completed, of which the last and longest in the spring of 2007 through Europe.

Wino also worked at Dave Grohl's 2004 Probot project, in which he sings a song and plays guitar and also served the guitar in the video Shake Your Blood.

The beginning of 2009 he released his first solo album, Punctuated Equilibrium, which was published as his other LPs since 1999 at Southern Lord. The simply " Wino " said tape graduated in the spring of 2009 a tour of Europe. However, the group is since the death of bassist Jon Blank, who died of a drug overdose, on ice. In 2010, however, his acoustic album Adrift followed, also under the name Wino in Exile on Mainstream Records.

Also in 2009, joined the band Shrinebuilder with Wino, an all-star project from the Doom-Metal-/Stoner-Rock-Szene. The band released their first album in 2009 already.

In February 2010, Wino went with his old Saint Vitus colleagues on a European tour. In the same year the music project Premonition was born. Then the album '13 'was released under the band name Premonition 13 In the summer of 2011.

In his long career as a musician Wino has collaborated with musicians like Lemmy Kilmister, Bill Ward & Geezer Butler ( Black Sabbath ) and Dave Grohl (Nirvana, Foo Fighters, Probot, and many others ).

Style

Wino is tuning his guitar regularly 2-5 semitones lower. He plays almost exclusively Gibson Les Pauls and Marshall stacks or the 1960 Sunn Model T. This creates a very warm, swirling but also muddy guitar sound. Wino plays at Saint Vitus pure Doom Metal. In his other bands you can hear more Stoner Metal, which is a mixture of hard rock, doom metal and stoner rock.
