So shortly afterwards, he founded a fanzine called The New Heavy Metal Revue and developed the idea of this scene with a compilation titled Metal Massacre imagine.

Slagel, who possessed now have very good contacts with the bands in Los Angeles, asked to come from his point of view in question groups, whether they want to contribute. One of the conditions was, however, that in any record label they are currently under contract, why Mötley Crüe on Metal Massacre I was not represented as originally planned. With borrowed money Slagel was 1982 5000 copies of Metal Massacre I press that sold out very quickly. Originally intended as a supplement to his fanzine brought one of the distributors Slagel on the idea of Metal Massacre bring out as a series. He should provide the music distribution company would press and distribute the LPs. This is considered the trigger for the establishment of the label Metal Blade.

The suggestions for possible bands won Slagel for the first issues through tape -trading and attending concerts. Lars Ulrich and James Hetfield of Metallica sent Slagel a demo of Hit the Lights, on the Lloyd Grant, a young Jamaican guitar player who had responded to a newspaper advertisement, nor the guitar solos played, although Mustaine was already in the band.
