Scottish & Newcastle

Scottish & Newcastle was a Scottish beverage company headquartered in Edinburgh, which was listed in the FTSE in London.

From the formerly regionally on Scotland and Northern England focused brewery, the largest brewer in the United Kingdom in 1995. It was followed by the expansion through various acquisitions.

With the brands Baltika, Foster's and Kronenbourg 1664 included three successful beer brands to Scottish & Newcastle. The company also owned the John Smith's and Strongbow brands in the UK, Kronenbourg Red & White in France, Sagres in Portugal, Lapin Kulta in Finland and Kingfisher in India. Even specialty beers such as Newcastle Brown Ale and Grimbergen were brewed.

Scottish & Newcastle agreed in the spring of 2008, the merger with the giant brewery Carlsberg and Heineken at a purchase price of 7.8 billion pounds ( 10.4 billion euros ). The Dutch took over, among others, the business of S & N in the UK and Ireland, the Danish company, took over the still to S & N owned 50 percent of the brewery group BBH, of which he already owned the other half (BBH mainly sold to Eastern European markets ). The French Kronenbourg brewery went to Carlsberg.
