SEA-ME-WE 3

Schematic diagram of the SEA-ME -WE -3 course

SEA-ME -WE 3 or South - East Asia - Middle East - Western Europe 3 is a submarine cable, Europe, Africa, Asia and Australia together. It was put into operation on 30 August 1999.

39,000 km Total length it is the largest submarine cable system. To increase capacity, and to improve signal quality Wavelength Division Multiplexing is used.

Landing points

The cable has 39 landing points in 33 countries and on four continents.

Disorders

Damage caused by ship anchors

Presumably through the ship's anchor cable was damaged in the first two years of the start twice, which led to several continents to partially significant disruption of traffic, which, however, could be countered by switching to alternative routes at short notice.

The first type of damage was done in November 2000 off the coast of Singapore. The parties most affected was Australia, which was temporarily cut off completely from the Internet, next to Japan, Indonesia and Hong Kong; to a very limited extent, the United Kingdom and the United States.

Australia was once again cut off from the Internet for several hours due to a cable break, which occurred in September 2001 off the coast of China in Shantou. China itself could allegedly resort to alternative routes.

Earthquake

On December 26, 2006, an earthquake of magnitude 7.1 has damaged the cable in East Asia off the coast of Taiwan. This has led to impairments in telephone and Internet traffic to and from East Asia. In December 2008, large parts of the Middle East do not have SEA- ME- WE 4 ( SMW4 ), SEA-ME -WE 3 ( SMW3 ) and FLAG EA were achievable because the cables between Italy and Egypt were interrupted. Although rumors have been spread over a stop, it was probably because of an earthquake.

Alleged Defect in Myanmar

A failure of the Internet in Myanmar during the demonstrations end of September 2007 could not be as alleged by the Government of Myanmar, attributed to a defect of SEA-ME -WE 3. The causes of failure remain unclear.

2013

A disturbance of SEA-ME -WE 3 between Singapore and Perth in Indonesian territorial waters impaired early 2013 Internet traffic in Australia.

Intelligence surveillance

In the summer of 2013 was known by documents of the former NSA employee and whistleblower Edward Snowden that the British intelligence agency GCHQ is to be able, 3 fully listen or save the data traffic of SEA-ME -WE, presumably at the landing point Goonhilly in Cornwall as part of the intelligence program tenses. As part of the UKUSA Agreement ( Five Eyes) provides the Australian Defence Signals Directorate Intelligence Service for assistance.
