Sergio van Dijk

Serginho van Dijk Sergio van Dijk or shortly ( born August 6, 1982 in Assen ) is an Indonesian- Dutch footballer who plays for Persib Bandung in Indonesia Super League in Indonesia since 2013.

Career

He began his career at LTC Assen. Later he moved to the youth of the FC Groningen until he was pulled into the first team in 1999. There, however, he could not prevail, which is why he went to Helmond Sport in 2002. After only three years it took him to FC Emmen. With both clubs him no promotion to the Eredivisie, the highest Dutch league.

On 16 June 2008 he went abroad and joined the Australian club Brisbane Roar (then Queensland Roar ), where he signed a two-year contract after seeing him Scouts in late May during a test match against Redlands United in which he scored two goals. On 19 July 2010 it was announced that he was eligible to play for the Indonesian national football team because his grandfather is from Indonesia. But at a meeting with Indonesian association representatives, he learned that he would give up his Dutch citizenship since dual citizenship in Indonesia is not allowed. At first he refused to leave his other nationality, as most of his family is from the Netherlands. Eventually he gave up his Dutch citizenship to play for Indonesia. He has already received his Indonesian passport.

Others

His first name Serginho is a tribute to the Brazilian football player Serginho Chulapa, who played in the Football World Cup 1982 in Brazil. His mother was at that time a big fan of Brazil. Van Dijk is a so-called Dutch Indonesian, that is, a parent has Indonesian roots.
