Shallow Life (English for mindless life ) is the fifth studio album by the Italian alternative band Lacuna Coil. It was released on 17 April 2009 via Century Media.

Formation

In an interview with British magazine " Kerrang! " Announced the singer Cristina Scabbia that the band wants with her new album received some experiments and try new things. In early 2008 the band began to work with the new song material. The members like the first album were trying to create the songs through jam sessions after the previous albums are more or less created on the computer. The ideas of the band members have been compiled in the rehearsal room and made into new songs. Overall, the band spent every day over a period of six months in the rehearsal room.

For the recordings introduced the band put together a list with three producers wish. The choice finally fell on Don Gilmore, who has previously worked with bands and artists such as Linkin Park, Avril Lavigne and Duran Duran. For the recordings, the band toured in September 2008 in the NRG Studios in Los Angeles. It was the first time that Lacuna Coil have recorded an album outside Europe.

In her hometown of Milan, the band turned a music video for the first single "Spellbound ". The recordings took place in the restaurant "Gold" instead, which is owned by the fashion house Dolce & Gabbana. The company hired the band for the filming of clothing available.

Background

Shallow Life is the first concept album of the band's history. All songs on the album deal with the superficiality of today's society and dissatisfaction associated with it. The album cover features a hand grenade whose body consists of a perfume bottle.

In "Not Enough" Scabbia and Ferro singing past each other and mimic a pair that cheating each other. "I Like It " is about a stalker. But the victim says the perpetrator only indirectly, that they do not like his act.

Reception

Shallow Life was mostly well received by the trade press. According to Marius Mutz from the online magazine Metal1.info, the band " the split between catchy and evocative songs brilliantly and convincingly ", but criticized that " there are in the second half of the album, some songs unmotivated ". He forgave eight out of ten. Timo Beisel from the online magazine Metalnews.de described Shallow Life as a " really strong album, even if can not convince each song" and gave the album six out of seven points.

Michael Hauptmann by the online magazine Bloodchamber other hand, compared with Shallow Life " a Ferrari, which has only 90 hp under the hood " and awarded six out of ten.
