Shangqiu

Province

Shangqiu (商丘市) is a prefecture -level city in the Chinese province of Henan. It has a total area of 10,658 km ² and about 8.31 million inhabitants ( end of 2003). Shangqiu was the first capital of the Shang dynasty.

Administrative Divisions

At county level, Shangqiu consists of two districts, an independent city and six circles together. These are:

Municipality Liang yuan (梁园区), 673 km ², 770,000 inhabitants, center, seat of the city government;
Municipality Suiyang (睢阳区), 913 km ², 770,000 inhabitants;
City Yongcheng (永城市), 2068 km ², 1.37 million inhabitants;
District Yucheng (虞城县), 1558 km ², 1.09 million inhabitants, capital: greater community Chengguan (城关镇);
Circle Minquan (民权县), 1222 km ², 860,000 inhabitants, capital: greater community Chengguan (城关镇);
Circle Ningling (宁陵县), 786 km ², 590,000 inhabitants, capital: greater community Chengguan (城关镇);
Circle Sui (睢县), 920 km ², 790,000 inhabitants, capital: greater community Chengguan (城关镇);
Circle Xiayi (夏邑县), 1470 km ², 1.13 million inhabitants, capital: greater community Chengguan (城关镇);
Circle Zhecheng (柘城县), 1048 km ², 940,000 inhabitants, capital: greater community Chengguan (城关镇).

Religion

Today the city is the seat of a Roman Catholic diocese.
