Shimoga or Shivamogga ( Kannada: ಶಿವಮೊಗ್ಗ Śivamogga [ ɕiʋʌmoɡ ː ʌ ] ) is a town in the Indian state of Karnataka. It is located in the west of Karnataka on the banks of the river Tunga, a little later unites with the Bhadra to the Tungabhadra. With around 322,000 inhabitants ( 2011 census ) Shimoga is the tenth largest city in Karnataka. The city is the administrative center of the district of Shimoga.

The name Shimoga is an anglicized form of Shivamogga, which in turn conventionally from the Sanskrit term Shivamukha ( " Face of Shiva " ) is derived. On the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of Karnataka in 2006, the state government decided, following a proposal of the writer UR Ananthamurthy to change the English name of 13 cities in Karnataka in its Kannada name forms. This should be renamed in Shimoga Shivamogga. Since the Indian central government to the name change has not yet been approved, the renaming process is not yet complete but.
