Shire of Balonne

Geography

The Shire is located on the southern border of the state to New South Wales about 440 km west of the capital Brisbane.

The largest town and administrative headquarters of the LGA is St George on the Balonne River with about 2400 inhabitants. Other towns are Bollon, Dirranbandi, levers, Mungindi, Nindigully and Thallon.

History

To 1846, the first expedition arrived in the area and named the Balonne River to a word from the Native American language. Beginning in 1864, the settlement began to St George and 15 years later, the district Ula Ula, which was renamed in 1903 in Balonne arose.

Management

The Balonne Shire Council has five members. The Mayor ( mayor) and four other Councillor shall be elected by all residents of the Shire. The LGA is not divided into electoral districts.
