Shire of Diamantina

Geography

The Shire is located in the Channel Country in the Australian outback in the northwest of the state on the border with the Northern Territory and South Australia. It is about 1400 km from the capital Brisbane and 570 km from Alice Springs.

Largest city and administrative headquarters of the LGA is the city bedourie with about 140 inhabitants. This rather small Birdsville with about 120 inhabitants is the only other major settlement. The settlement Betoota in the southeast of the Shires was abandoned in 2004.

Partially or completely belong to the field of the Shires of Simpson Desert National Park, the Diamantina National Park and the Astrebla - Downs National Park.

History

Is named the area after the Diamantina River, which takes its name from Lady Diamantina Roma, the first governor of Queensland woman. 1886 local government was set up in the field, first in the south to the border with South Australia Birdsville, later she moved to the more central bedourie.

Management

The Diamantina Shire Council has five members. The Mayor ( mayor) and four other Councillor shall be elected by all residents of the Shire. The LGA is not divided into electoral districts.
