Shosanbetsu, Hokkaido

Shosambetsu (Japanese初 山 别 村, -mura ) is a village in the administrative district Tomamae in the sub-prefecture Rumoi on Hokkaidō.

Etymology

The name comes from Ainu Shosambetsu shusampetsu, which means "river with the little swamp ".

Geography

The three main settlements of Shosambetsu are Toyosaki (豊 岬) in the north, Shosambetsu (初 山 别) and Ariake (有 明) in the south, each located on the Japan Sea. All three suffer from severe population decline.

The village area is (风 连 别 川, -gawa ) drained by the river Fūrembetsu.

Shosambetsu is the only village commune in the sub-prefecture.

History

The village Shosambetsu as an independent municipality was created on September 19, 1901 as a spin-off from the village Haboro. On April 1, 1909, was appointed 2nd class municipality.

Attractions

In Toyosaki is the observatory Shosambetsu the northernmost observatory in Japan. This is located on the edge of Gründanlage Misakidai - kōen (みさき 台 公園) which in turn is due to a departure of the National Road 232 and on which a camp site, a service station and a service area is located.
