Shuttleworth Collection

The Shuttleworth Collection is an aircraft and automotive museum on the airfield of Old Warden in Bedfordshire. The collection enjoys because of the diversity of the carefully restored aircraft worldwide high reputation. Part of the aircraft is obtained in airworthy condition and presented in flight at various events.

History

The collection was founded in 1928 by the British aviation pioneer Richard Shuttleworth. Shuttleworth crashed on the night of August 2, 1940 with his Fairey Battle and was killed. His mother founded in 1944 the Richard Ormonde Shuttleworth Remembrance Trust to " study the science and practice of aviation, forestry and agriculture ."

Collection

The restoration and maintenance of the exhibits is performed by eight full-time staff, who are supported by a host of volunteers. They are members of the Shuttleworth Veteran Aeroplane Society ( SVAS ), which currently has about three thousand members. The support of the company is critical to maintaining the collection and restoration of the exhibits. The Foundation strives to get as many planes as possible in an airworthy condition or restore them, which is also the intention of the founder of the collection.

Unusual exhibits in the collection are the so-called Edwardians, airplanes that were built during the reign of the British King Edward VII or shortly thereafter. It is particularly noteworthy that these aircraft are still airworthy and regularly - are presented in flight - depending on weather conditions. The oldest airworthy Bleriot XI exhibit is one from 1909. This aircraft still has its original engine. This aircraft is the oldest airworthy aircraft worldwide at all, however, the Bleriot XI of the Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome in the U.S. is just three weeks younger.

The Shuttleworth Collection leads up to twelve days by air each year, in each of which one of the exhibits will be presented in flight. Part of this is also an evening show. In addition, a dedicated flight day for students in schools located in the region find model airplane days and instead of once a year.
