Sidney Smith (snooker player)

Sidney Smith (born 26 March 1908 in Killamarsh, Derbyshire, England; † 1990) was an English snooker and English billiards player.

Personal

In his late teens, when he already lived in Doncaster, Sidney Smith began to make a name for himself as a professional player. In the Yorkshire Professionals he had already brought both titles in English Billiards and Snooker games. To national fame he then passed through the victory in the Junior Professional Championship in 1929. This tournament was open to all players under 24 years, who had not yet participated in the Professional Championship. 1931 wrote Harry Young, a reporter for the The Evening News that Smith 's five best English players, behind Joe Davis, Tom Newman, Willie Smith and Claude Falkiner heard.

He died in 1990 at the age of 82 years.

Career

Snooker

Smith was the first player managed on a snooker tournament CenturyBreak of 136, which was with the Daily Mail Gold Cup 1939. Previously, he had already set up on 11 December 1936 a new world record of 133 points in the Thurston's Snooker Handicap ' Championship. In the Daily Mail Gold Cup 1939 and 1940 he was a finalist in the years. Among his greatest successes, a second place behind Joe Davis, 1938, 1939, and the title against Albert Brown in 1952 at the News of the World Championship.

In the Snooker World Championships Smith was the final twice, in 1938 when he beat Joe Davis ' brother Fred with 18:13, and 1939. Moreover, he was a semifinalist four times in the years 1937, 1940, 1947 and 1949.

English Billiards

During the 1930s, Smith toured extensively with his namesake Willi Smith, both were under contract with the famous Table and Queue manufacturer Burroughes & Watts.

His achievements include, among others, a 939er break that Smith played in 52 minutes, and a 2- hour average of 296 points in a game against Willi Smith in February 1932 in Newcastle. Later he managed three 1,000- Breaks: 1,023, 1,090 and 1,292, which was his personal record.

1948 Smith won the UK Professional Billiards Championship when he defeated in the final with John Barrie 7.000:6.428.
