Sigismund I the Old

Sigismund the Old ( Zygmunt I Stary Polish, Lithuanian Žygimantas Senasis; * January 1, 1467 Kozienice, Poland, † April 1, 1548 in Krakow, Poland) was, from 1506 Sigismund I, King of Poland and Grand Duke Sigismund II as of Lithuania, from the noble family of the Jagiellonian.

Life

Sigismund was the fifth son of Casimir IV and Elisabeth of Habsburg, who was a granddaughter of Holy Roman Emperor Sigismund of Luxembourg. His eldest brother Vladislav was King of Bohemia since 1471 and was also crowned in 1490 as King of Hungary. He gave him the duchy of Glogau 1499-1506 and 1501-1511 the Duchy of Opava, both of which were a fief of the crown of Bohemia.

Sigismund was followed in 1506 his brothers Johann Albrecht ( † 1501) and Alexander ( † 1506) on the Polish throne. During his reign, Poland reached its greatest abundance of power. After decades of conflict with the Teutonic Order, the Grand Master, Sigismund's nephew Albert of Brandenburg -Ansbach, 1525, when the suzerainty of the Polish Crown acknowledged. Albrecht became the first Duke of Prussia. He was also Governor of Upper Silesia.
