Bar, Ukraine

Bar (Ukrainian Бар ) is a city in the Vinnytsia Oblast in central Ukraine, a center of Rajons same name. It has about 17,200 inhabitants ( 2005).

History

The city was named in the 14th century Riw. 1452 the city was destroyed by Tatars. The city was rebuilt since then bar the early 16th century was the Polish Queen Bona Sforza build here a large fortress, which was the second largest in Podolia. 1672-1674 and 1675-1699, the city was part of the Ottoman Empire. 1768 here the Bar Confederation was founded. In the same year the Russian troops of General Petr Kretschetnikow have stormed the city and destroyed the fortress.

Since the 1970s, is located in Bar a compressor station, which was built at that time natural gas pipeline Druzhba route.
