History

The Sihltalbahn ( SiTb ) adopted on August 3, 1892 to operate between their starting point Giesshübel in the former town Wiedikon and Sihl forest in the village of Horgen. The freight cars - the railway carried a large part of the wood from the Sihl in Zurich - were passed in Giesshübel to the Swiss Northeastern Railway (NOB ), which they carried over the opened on December 1, 1892 link Giesshübel Wiedikon to the freight depot Zurich. The passenger trains on the other hand used the route opened in 1875 Giesshübel - Selnau the neighboring Uetlibergbahn ( UEB ), which was extended to the common double-track route.

Five years later, on June 1, 1897 NOB opened its access routes to the Gotthard railway, this opportunity also took the SiTb and extended their range of Sihl forest, along the Sihl, to Sihlbrugg. This has scarcely populated part of the canton of Zurich, a second link between the SiTb and NOB was created, which was previously two practically equal length train routes exist between Wiedikon and Sihlbrugg. To the station building, located on the territory of the municipality Horgen, created a one-digit number houses that make up station with the train station, the town Sihlbrugg.

1924 was the web as the Swiss Federal Railways, electrified with 15 kV 16 2/ 3 Hz AC. Since the Sihltalbahn on the same tracks as the wrong Uetlibergbahn between Selnau and Giesshübel, the pantograph and the overhead contact line of DC powered Uetlibergbahn were offset by 130 cm laterally.

With the lowering of the left-bank Seebahn the link Giesshübel Wiedikon electrified in 1927 and moved into a tunnel. The tunnel opens into the station Wiedikon under the rider on the track, railway station 3

Sihltal Zurich Uetliberg Bahn

In 1932 received the Sihltalbahn the operation and management of the railway company Zurich - Uetliberg ( BZUe ) transferred from the city of Zurich and got over 40 years of benefit in addition to their own operation also the Uetlibergbahn before it on 1 January 1973 merged with this. The Sihltalbahn took over the majority of shares in Uetlibergbahn and changed its name to Zurich Uetliberg Bahn Sihltal ( SZU ).

The operation of the webs, the fusion had no effect; as far as vehicles ( diesel locomotives, cars ) were used for both routes, this has already been done so far, the passenger transport vehicles are due to the current system are not interchangeable. With the merger, however, was changed successively affixed to the vehicles, which were then written for years with SZU uniform, but wore different colors. In the 1990s, it covered the standardized logo and introduced the old names Uetlibergbahn and Sihltalbahn again, which mounted again today in this form on the vehicles.

Track Removal

In 1990, of the Zurich S-Bahn out the SZU was extended to the central station and thus linked with the other standard-gauge rail lines. The temporary, above-ground station Selnau was abolished and the area after 115 years, returned to the city. As these constructions created in the right half of Sihlbetts - the left half is reserved for Sihltiefstrasse ( A3/A1 city highway ) - performs the dual route under the Selnau -Areal by, in the Sihltunnel where the new station Selnau is, until the underground SZU station under the ShopVille, south of the main train station.

Since intersections are to be avoided as far as possible between the contact lines of the two power systems capable of between Giesshübel and Selnau continue to intersect only trains the Sihltalbahn between Selnau and the main train station, however, only the traits of Uetlibergbahn.

Until the construction of the tunnel route, the max was. Slope of the Sihltalbahn 28 per thousand. The Underground Introduction to the main train station made a steep ramp of 50 per mille necessary.

Explanation of line kilometering

The old station was Selnau kilometer zero, the new station Selnau and the Central Station but "before" this zero point. Since negative kilometer are not common and a full Neukilomterierung SZU was excluded certain one the main train station 90.00 km. Selnau is 91.04 kilometers and 91.23 kilometers is equal to km 00:00, from here, the old chainage.

Shortening of the S4

On 9 December 2006 reversed the last timetabled passenger trains between Sihl and Sihlbrugg. This happened to indemnify vehicles for schedule compression of S 4. The route remains provisionally receive operational and is sporadically traveled by vintage trains.

Infrastructure

The Zurich Giesshübel station was since the founding of Sihltalbahn also the seat of the railway company, by the merger of SZU he became their headquarters. In addition to a relatively extensive system for freight that is served up today by SBB Cargo, located at the train station and the workshop and depot both SZU lines.

Until the 1990s, a part of the rolling stock was parked on sidings in Selnau station, with the demolition of the station and the return of the area to the city of Zurich disappeared these spaces. To replace a coach house for the Uetlibergbahn was created on Giesshübel station, where today all the vehicles are parked. For the Sihltalbahn, however, a new, open parking area was created when Langnau - Gattikon station.
