Silpa Bhirasri

Silpa Bhirasri ( Thai: ศิลป์ พี ระ ศรี, RTGS: Sin Phirasi, pronounced: [sin p ʰ i ː ráʔsĭ ː ]; birth name Corrado Feroci; born September 15, 1892 in Florence, Italy, † 14 May 1962 Bangkok ) is the father of modern art in Thailand. He founded the first art school in the country, which was later upgraded to Silpakorn University.

Life

He completed his studies in 1914 at the Academy of Fine Arts ( Accademia di Belle Arti ), Florence. Then he taught sculpture at the Academy and was known as the creator of war memorials. In 1924 the Fine Arts Department invited him to Thailand to teach Western sculpture there. As Dean of the Faculty of Painting Sculpture and the Art College he was the mainstay and driving force for the study of art in Thailand. Feroci itself was internationally recognized as an authority on Thai art.

From the 1930s he created on behalf of the Nationalist government of Field Marshal Phibunsongkhram numerous monumental statues and sculptures in the style of Italian Fascism.

In order to escape during the Second World War a capture by the Japanese, he changed his name and became Thai citizen.

He died in 1962 in Bangkok. He was awarded posthumously for his achievements and accomplishments in the Thai art the Grand Cross of the Order of the Crown of Thailand. September 15, his birthday, in many parts of the country in his memory applies.
