Sils im Engadin ( German and until 1943 the official name, Romansh Segl? / I ) is a municipality in the district of the Upper Engadine, Maloja district of the canton of Graubünden in Switzerland.

Geography

Sils im Engadin lies on a piece of land between Lake Sils and Lake Silvaplana. The community is a mixture of languages ​​German / Romansh, which is reflected in a double name.

Sils -Maria, Sils -Baselgia next to one of the two hamlets of Sils, is a ski resort and offers a variety of sports and recreational opportunities, cultural offerings.

Personalities

The magnificent location and the good climate was welcoming many prominent personalities. Hermann Hesse was happy here, and especially Friedrich Nietzsche, who spent in Sils Maria 1881-1888 seven summers ( except for the year 1882) and some of his most important works created there, spread the reputation of the place and the lake around the world. The painter Andrea Robbi came from Sils and spent a large part of his tragic life in his house on the square next to the post. The American Secretary of State Fred Iklé was born in Val Fex.

Tourism

Tourism is a key economic driver of the community. The mountain of Sils is the Furtschellas; she is hiking in summer and alpine skiing in the winter. The car-free Fex Valley is operated by a licensed horse - omnibus. The Fex Valley and the lakes level are used for light summer hiking and winter for cross country skiing. About the frozen lakes leads the Engadin Ski Marathon.
