Simeulue island

Simeulue is an Indonesian island off the west coast of Sumatra. It is 150 kilometers off the west coast of Sumatra in the Malay Archipelago in the Indian Ocean.

Geography

The island is twice the size of Rügen with 2,310 square kilometers. Capital is Sina Bang in the southeast of the island. Simeulue is located 60 km north- west of the Banyak Islands and 140 km north- west of Nias.

Population

Most of the 82,000 residents are Muslim. A large part of living from agriculture and fishing. The most important products are cloves and coconuts.

Nature

Simeulue is considered natural paradise. The island has developed a unique flora and fauna. To the north are mangrove forests, inland is forested. Along the coast there are coral reefs and numerous small islands. Simeulue is located off the beaten track of mass tourism. Only a few surfers have found so far to get there.

Natural disasters

Simeulue is located a few kilometers from the epicenter of the earthquake from 26 December 2004. There were indeed massive damage, but few deaths. People fled in time in the mountains, because they were warned by tales: As Simeulue was taken in 1907 by a major tsunami that killed thousands. Even then, the sea had initially withdrawn.

Due to a major fire on the three -meter high tidal waves in the wake of the heavy sea quake with epicenter Nias on 28 March 2005, the majority of the island was destroyed. The adjacent Banyak Islands were hit hard.
