Sofasa

The Sociedad de Fabricación de Automotores SA, mostly only mentioned with their acronym Sofasa, is an existing since 1969 automobile and commercial vehicle manufacturer with corporate headquarters in Envigado, Colombia. The company was formed as a joint venture in collaboration of the French Renault group with the Colombian government and the Colombian Group Valores Bavaria. In addition to vehicles of the Renault brand are of the Sofasa also vehicles of Japanese brands Daihatsu and Toyota assembled for the South American markets. The company also operates another plant at Duitama. Furthermore, there's in Valencia, Venezuela since 1995 a subsidiary under the name Sociedad de Fabricación y Venta de car Móviles SA Since 2007 there has also been another joint venture under the name of Hino Motors Manufacturing de Colombia for distribution and manufacture of vehicles of Hino brand.

Activity you took the operation in 1970 to the production of the Renault 4L. The aim of the government was to expand with the help of the new operation, the infrastructure for the automotive industry in Germany. Renault Sofasa presented at that time by the Chrysler Colmotores SA the second car manufacturer in the country. In the following years Renault was also the car models Renault 6 and Renault to produce 12. In the eighties we had the last two replaced by the Renault 18 and Renault 9. At the end of the decade, Renault acquired a participation in the government and thus took on the majority of shares.

Later followed orders from Toyota to the Toyota Land Cruiser and the Toyota Hilux to assemble for the local market. A short time later also modernized its local Renault model range by the previously imported Renault 21 went into production under the name Renault Etoile. A year later, the Renault 19 was followed with a wide selection of trim levels. But the Renault Clio was able to prevail on the Colombian market and was one of the most successful cars of the French brand. Meanwhile, the R19 has been renamed from Sofasa in Renault Energy. With the Renault Mégane Unique and the based on the Clio Renault symbol of this success could then be increased again. The current model range, however, is provided by the Renault Logan, Renault Mégane the Odeon, the Renault Sandero Stepway Renault, the Renault Symbol Avancée and since 2012 the Renault Duster.

The plant is 60 percent owned by Renault since 2003. The other parties are Toyota with 28 percent and Mitsui with a share of 12 percent.
