Sofia Sakorafa

Sofia Sakorafa (Greek Σοφία Σακοράφα, born April 29, 1957 in Trikala ) is a former Greek athlete. At a height of 1.77 m her competition weight was 73 kg.

Overall introduced Sofia Sakorafa 16 Greek records in the javelin on, starting with 41.32 meters in 1972, where her career was marked by the permanent rivalry with Anna Verouli.

Sofia Sakorafa took in 1976 and 1980 Olympic Games in part. She succeeded both times in qualifying not a valid throw. At the European Championships in 1978 she missed with 56.76 meters as Thirteenth qualifying in the finals by 42 centimeters.

1981 threw Verouli and Sakorafa first time over 60 meters. At the European Championships in 1982 in Athens was up to the fifth passage Antje Kempe from the GDR with 67.94 meters in the lead. Then Anna Verouli succeeded with 70.02 meters, a new personal best. Sofia Sakorafa won the bronze medal with 67.04 meters. The two medals in the javelin were the only medals for the host nation at these European Championships.

Two and a half weeks after the European Championship Finals presented Sofia Sakorafa in Chania, Crete with 74.20 meters set a new world record, surpassing the two-month old world record of Finland's Tiina Lillak by 1.80 meters. In June 1983, Lillak took the world record back with 74.76 meters. Due to a shoulder injury had to Sofia Sakorafa cancel participation in the World Championships 1983. It was not until 1986 Sakorafa joined again in competitions, but found no more connection to the top.

Sakorafa came before the Olympic Games in 2004 once again in the headlines. As a city council deputies of Maroussi, the suburb of Athens where the Olympic Stadium is, she applied to be allowed to go to Palestine at the start. Ultimately, their plan failed because they did not meet the Olympic standard.
