Music in the fists (AKA Something to Sing About) is an American musical comedy from the year 1937. The film was produced by Victor Schertzinger and Zion Myers at Zion Meyers Productions in black and white and distributed by Grand National Pictures. Schertzinger who also directed and wrote the story, which was implemented by Austin Parker as a screenwriter. The U.S. premiere took place on September 30, 1937.

Action

The singer and dancer Terry Rooney goes to Hollywood to star as an actor in a movie. He leaves behind his fiancée Rita Wyatt and his band in New York City. After the shoot, Terry and Rita travel with a ship and secretly marry. When they return, the film has already begun in the cinemas and a huge success. Terry is a sought-after star. The film studio tried to persuade Terry to a fixed contract, but only under the condition that he does not get married and occurs as a single in the public. The studio hopes that this will attract female fans. Rita is at first more than Terry's secretary, but the marriage deep trouble with the heavy workload. Rita is about to sing again, while Terry turns another film back to New York City. Meanwhile female lead actress Stefanie Hajos now spread rumors that she was romantically involved with Terry to take advantage of its popularity. Rita thinks he's cheating on her and makes her marriage to revenge him publicly. Terry travels to New York City to reclaim Rita, and the two get along again.

Background

Music in the fists was shot in June and July 1937 in the Grand National Studios in Hollywood. The working title was When I'm with You. The budget was according to different specifications 450000-900000 U.S. dollars. The film was released in the United States in 1947 under the title Battling Hoofer again. After Grand National Pictures in 1939 went bankrupt, the exploitation rights went to the already released movies as well as music in the fists of Astor Pictures. In 1965 the copyright of the film was not renewed, so that the film in the United States since then is public domain.

Awards

Constantin Bakaleinikoff was nominated in 1938 with music in the fists for an Oscar in the category of Best Original Score.
