Gene Lockhart

Eugene "Gene " Lockhart ( born July 18, 1891 in London, Ontario, Canada, † March 31, 1957 in Santa Monica, California, United States) was an American film and stage actor and theater director of Canadian origin.

Life

Gene Lockhart was born in 1891 in London, Canada, the son of John Coates Lockhart and Ellen Mary Delany - Lockhart, who had Scottish roots. Through his father, a trained singer, Lockhart came early with acting and singing in touch. At age six, Lockhart was a member of a Canadian band in Canada, the United States and Britain on the stage. Lockhart therefore visited various schools in Canada and later in London, UK. At 15, he already wrote their own skits. He was also briefly football player at the Toronto Argonauts as a teenager. Lockhart's professional training took place at the Juilliard School in New York City before making his debut in September 1917 in The Riviera Girl on Broadway. Also led Lockhart in February 1924 for the first time in a piece entitled The Wonderful Visit directing. At Lockhart known pieces included Uncle Tom's Cabin, which celebrated premiere in May 1933, and placed in February 1949 performance drama Death of a Salesman.

Lockhart, who had also been in 1922 in the theater film Smilin 'Through his debut as a film actor, was then in over 140 feature films and more recently television series in front of camera. His most successful film sustained was the 1938 film drama produced Algiers, was nominated for the Lockhart 1939 for an Oscar as Best Supporting Actor. Also, The Sea Wolf from 1941 is one of the better-known films of the actor.

He also founded a small acting dynasty. So he married in 1924, the British actress Kathleen Lockhart. Their daughter, who was born only a year later was also an actress June Lockhart as his granddaughter Anne Lockhart ( b. 1953 ). He himself died in 1957, at the age of 65 years, on a thrombosis and was buried in the cemetery Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City, California. Today two stars wear on the Walk of Fame in Hollywood its name.
