Sospel

Sospel ( in Provençal " Sospèu " and in Italian " Sospello " ) is a municipality with 3537 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in southeastern France in the Alpes- Maritimes approximately 20 kilometers north of Menton, in the Provence- Alpes- Côte d' Azur. The city is located at about 350 meters above sea level on the edge of the Mercantour National Park on the French branch of Tendabahn and is drained by the river Bévéra.

Attractions

Sospel has a medieval-themed Old Town. Over the river Bévéra a bridge from the 11th century that has a serving as a customs house in earlier times tower. The bridge was badly damaged in 1944 and rebuilt after the war until 1953. The central square is the Place Saint -Nicolas with the Cathedral Saint -Michel. The church from the mid-17th century is a mix of styles from classic French and Italian Baroque and Romanesque bell tower of a previous building.

Sospel is a major stage in the French GR 52A, the ' Sentier du Mercantour Panoramique ', and the GR 52 meet here also two ways of Via Alpina together: Sospel by passing the ' red route ', which in a total of 161 stages of Trieste to Monaco crosses each Alpine country, and ends the beginning in the Valais Alps ' blue route ' of the Via Alpina.
