South Street Seaport

South Street Seaport is a largely landmarked district or neighborhood in the New York district of Manhattan, where Fulton Street meets the East River.

Location and architecture

The South Street Seaport ( South Street Seaport Historic District ) neighborhood is located approximately between the East River, the Brooklyn Bridge, Fletcher Street, Pearl Street and South Street. It is thus a very small, but historically significant district.

It is adjacent to the Financial District, but is clearly distinct from this: Here you will find one of the oldest buildings in downtown Manhattan, including the largest collection of historic commercial buildings of the early 19th century. History

The South Street Seaport Museum was founded in 1967 by Peter and Norma Stanford. When the museum opened, the central concern of the Seaport Museum conservation study was to promote a historic site by the " shops " mostly as an imitation of working environments that were represented during the heyday of Seaports.

Originally under the Seaport - remediation a block of buildings, known as Schermerhorn Row should be obtained at the Fulton Street Southwest side, which were threatened either by decay or new construction projects, at a time when hardly anyone about the history of the New York shipbuilding industry cared - except some antiquarians.

South Street Seaport Museum

Decided in 1998, the Congress of the United States that the South Street Seaport Museum form with various other museums which together constitute the "America's National Maritime Museum ."

Festivals
