South Tyneside

South Tyneside is a metropolitan borough in the metropolitan county of Tyne and Wear in England. The Borough is adjacent to Newcastle upon Tyne and Gateshead to the west, Sunderland in the south, and North Tyneside to the north. The natural boundaries are the North Sea to the east and north of the River Tyne. Administrative seat is the town of South Shields. Other important towns in the district are Cleadon, Hebburn, Jarrow, The Boldons and Whitburn.

History

The reorganization of the limits and the capabilities of local authorities led in 1974 to form the Metropolitan Borough. The County Borough South Shields, the Municipal Borough of Jarrow and were fused while the urban districts Boldon and Hebburn. These administrative units previously belonged to County Durham.

1986 South Tyneside was in fact a Unitary Authority, as the central government dissolved the superordinate management of the county. South Tyneside was for ceremonial purposes part of Tyne and Wear, as well as for individual higher-level tasks such as firefighters and public transport.

Economy

Previously South Tyneside was primarily known for its many shipyards. In addition, there were also coal mines and chemical industries. In the second half of the 20th century, most companies joined similar to the Ruhr. Therefore, the end of the 20th century there was a high rate of unemployment in the Borough. For several years, however, the trend is reversed, and settle back to farms, especially in the service sector.

The Motorway M1, the M19 motorway and other major roads connect South Tyneside with the rest of Britain. The people of South Tyneside speak a local English dialect called ' Geordie '.

The most famous people from South Tyneside are probably the former Prime Minister of New Zealand, Sir William Fox and film director Ridley Scott.

South Tyneside is a partner city in the French cities of Epinay- sur -Seine and Noisy- le -Sec and the German city of Wuppertal. With the city of Wuppertal first talks on partnership have already been held in 1950, a first youth exchange took place in 1951. Today regularly travel youth clubs of South Tyneside to Wuppertal or vice versa.
