Spanish Colonial Fortifications of the Philippines

Spanish forts are pretty common in the Philippines, they are in generally in a poor state of preservation. In a largely good condition, partially reconstructed, are the fortresses Fuerza de Capul, the Watchtower in Daunis, the Fuerza Punta Cruz, the Fuerza de San Andres and the Fuerza de Sta. Isabel. These five fortifications are located since 2006 on the suggestion list of the Philippines for inclusion in the World Heritage List of UNESCO.

Fuerza de Capul

The Fuerza de Capul is located in the municipality Capul, on the homonymous island Capul in the Samar Sea, Province of Northern Samar. It is a fortified church, which was built in the 18th century by order of the Jesuits. The floor plan of the building is rectangular, each with a bastion at the Eckmauern.

Dauis Watchtower

The Dauis Watchtower is located in the municipality of Dauis on Panglao Island, Province of Bohol. It was built in 1774 by the Order of Augustinian Recollects and served the vessel traffic monitoring the waterway between the island of Panglao Tagbilaran and the community, on the main island of Bohol. The tower ht a hexagonal floor plan and is divided into three levels. Above the entrance to the tower, the year of construction and the arms of the Order was incorporated.

Fuerza Punta Cruz

The fort Punta Cruz is on the coast in the town of Maribojoc, Bohol. It was built in 1796 by the Order of Augustinian Recollects. The fortress has a triangular floor plan with a hexagonal built first floor. As building material coral stone was used. Above the entrance is emblazoned the coat of arms of the Kingdom of Spain and the year of construction.

Fuerza de San Andres

The Fuerza de San Andres is on the territory of the municipality of Romblon, Romblon province. You, built on a hill above the village, beginning of the 17th century by the Order of Augustinian Recollects. The fortress has a square floor plan, each with a round tower at each corner.

Fuerza de Sta. Isabel

The Fuerza de Sta. Isabel is in the Municipality of Taytay, Province of Palawan. It was built on the coast to the Sulu Sea in 1738 by the Order of Augustinian Recollects. The fortress has a square floor plan, each with a bastion at each corner of the building. The bastions were the saints of the Roman Catholic Church of San Toribio, San Miguel, San Juan and Sta. Isabel dedicated. In the fortress there is a chapel.
