Spišský Štiavnik

Spišský Štiavnik (Slovak 1927-1948 " Šťavník " - to 1927 " Štiavnik "; German Schawnig or damage Fing, Hungarian Savnik ) is a city and a municipality in Poprad Okres the Prešov Region, with 2680 inhabitants.

Geography

The municipality is located in the upper valley of the river Hornád in the traditional landscape Zips. North is smaller mountain range rises Kozie chrbty, south, however, the Karst Slovak Paradise. Spišský Štiavnik is located 13 kilometers from Poprad.

East of the town is the town Kaštieľ, but this is not an official part of the municipality.

History

Its history is closely connected with the medieval Cistercian abbey, which is mentioned in 1246. A place there is first mentioned in 1294 as vila Sceunuk and belonged to the manor of the monastery. Since the 16th century the owners were the families Lasky, Thurzos, Rueber, Thokoly since 1674 then the Jesuits, and in 1776 until the abolition of serfdom, the village belonged to the diocese of Spis. Nevertheless, the place was a medium-sized agricultural community during these times.

Attractions

  • Gothic Roman Catholic church from the end of the 14th century, the Baroque style in the 18th century
  • Renaissance country castle from the 16th and 17th centuries in the district Kaštieľ, on the site of the former fortified monastery. Since today is a professional school there, is not possible to visit the interior.
