Srinagar ( Kashmiri: سری نگر Srīnagar, Urdu: شرینگر, Srinagar, Dogri: श्रीनगर Srinagar ) is a city in the northern Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. It is the administrative seat of the district of Srinagar and in the summer months in the state.

The city has about 1.2 million inhabitants ( 2011 census ). Srinagar is situated at an altitude of 1,730 m above sea level in the central highlands and Kashmir, on the River Jhelum, which drains the entire basin.

History and Sights

The first settlement in the area of present-day Srinagar was founded in the 3rd century BC by King Asoka. The city of Srinagar itself was founded by King Pravarasena to the Christian era.

The university city of Srinagar ( Kashmir University) is an important tourist resort since the 19th century. It is sometimes compared because of its many waterways with Venice and is known for its houseboats that serve as tourist accommodation. In the city and around the Dal Lake is spread are several gardens which date from the time of the Mughal Emperor. There are efforts to incorporate these gardens in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

On the north - western shore of the Dal Lake, the great Hazrat Bal Mosque is located. The mosque has a special significance for Muslims, as it is a repository of a single hair from the beard of the Prophet Mohammed.

The 371 BC built Hindu Shankaracharya Temple Mount (also: Takht -e- Suleiman ), which is located in 3352 m altitude on the same mountain in sight of the city, is the oldest shrine in Kashmir.

Srinagar is affected by the Kashmir conflict, but the Foreign Office does not advise ( travel information from the AA as at 28 July 2011) from traveling to the city of Srinagar. In Srinagar, there is a headquarters of the UN Observer Mission UNMOGIP, which monitors the ceasefire line between India and Pakistan.

Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad claimed in 1908 who claimed the promised Messiah and Mahdi to be the end time that God had told him that Jesus was buried in Srinagar. This hypothesis has since been recorded several times in the esoteric literature and in the city is the Rozabal shrine, which is known as Jesus' grave.

Traffic

Srinagar is connected to the National Highway 1A to Jammu and to the National Highway 1 D with Leh.

The Srinagar International Airport offers numerous connections to cities of India and to a small number of international airports.

The station will connect Srinagar Srinagar to the expected 2018 completion of the Kashmir Railway with Jammu and therefore with the further route network of Indian Railways. Sections of the route have been put into operation, but do not lead them so far out of Kashmir.

Economy

In the city of traditional carpets, copper and silver, as well as products made ​​of leather and silk are produced.
