The Edward Szymkowiak Stadium ( Stadium in Polish. Edwarda Szymkowiaka ) is a 1929 -built football stadium in the southern Polish city of Bytom. The club Polonia Bytom from the first Polish league, the Ekstraklasa, wearing his games from here. Named the stadium is named after the former football goalkeeper Edward Szymkowiak (1932-1990), who played twelve years for Polonia Bytom.

History

Before the Second World War, when Bytom ( German Bytom ) still belonged to Germany, the plant was named by President Paul von Hindenburg. On 16 August 1942, the German national football team played a friendly match against Romania. The game ended with a clear 7:0 victory of the German team and three gates of Fritz Walter in front of 55,000 spectators. The complex was renovated in 2007-2008. The stadium can find space currently 5,500 spectators. Near the stadium, the club house, a gymnasium and several training pitches located.

In the 1960s, as Polonia Bytom was still a top team, nor could find place in about 60,000 spectators. Thus came to a game by the International Football Cup 1964/65 against FC Schalke 04 ( 6:0 ) 60,000 spectators in the stadium. The stadium was very modern at that time and only a few years old. It was almost standing room only available. In the early 1980s, Polonia Bytom found itself in a financial crisis because mines in the Upper Silesian coal basin, which funded Polonia closed. It was not until 2007, when Poland rose to the Ekstraklasa and had to meet the requirements of the Football Association PZPN, the club invested in the stadium. The games of the first round in 2007/ 08 had Polonia but unsubscribe in the stadium of Ruch Chorzów. The plant got a flood light system with an output of 1840 lux, the old main stand was renovated and relocated a soil heating under the playing field. 2008, a roof over the grandstand was installed and protects the fans from snow or rain in games.
