National Park discussion

Since March 2007, the inclusion of parts of the northern Steigerwald Nature Park is discussed in the UNESCO World Natural Heritage Program by the reclassification into a national park Steigerwald controversial. A study by the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation lists those parts of the Steigerwald due to occurring there very rare beech - forest stocks and the immense species richness as particularly worthy of protection. Around 11,000 hectares, which accounts for nearly nine percent of the national forest should be converted into a national park on the concept. Interest of private forest owners, corporate forest owners, forestry, agriculture and political camps are trying to prevent this, especially with regard to the loss of jobs.

Proponent

As one of the first and most famous proponent of the National Park Steigerwald applies Bernhard Grzimek, also of German forestry scientist Georg Sperber. End of April 2008 called conservation associations of friends per National Park Steigerwald launched to promote together for the national park idea. In the merger, nine regional and national interest groups are active, including the federal government nature conservation in Bavaria, the country's federation for bird protection in Bavaria and WWF Germany (as of November 13, 2010 ). Since the beginning of October 2009, the Friends operate an information office in the market town Ebrach.

Opponent

Shortly before the National Park opponents have the club Our Steigerwald founded eV. Members include besides over 3,000 private persons (July 2010) 17 organizations such as the Bavarian Forest Owners' Association, various regional groups of the Bavarian Farmers Association and the Forestry Association of Lower Franconia, added 14 needs in the envisaged national park area municipalities (as November 13, 2010 ). Instead of a national park opponents vote for a stepping stone concept of the Bavarian State Forestry: Forest management Ebrach takes a portion of the forest area from the use out and networked distributed over the state forest area stepping stones across corridors. The remaining forest area is further cultivated.

Stand

The former Bavarian Environment Minister Markus Söder looked for a national park Steigerwald no future, unless it is supported by the general population. However, this is just in the Steigerwald not currently the case, Söder explained early November 2010 on the outskirts of the ceremony celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Bavarian Forest National Park.

On 12 July 2011, the Bavarian government decided against the establishment of a national park in the Steigerwald. Instead, a center for sustainable forest management in Handthal arose. It is scheduled to open in September 2014. The conference venue is in addition to educational offerings and also attract tourists. For 2015, construction of a treetop path is planned.
