Note the steep, sometimes overhanging conglomerate rock walls, creating the Steyr gorge the character of a canyon. The Steyr has a summer maximum temperature of 16 ° C and for long stretches or water quality class 1 strong current makes the sometimes shallow river in some places dangerous.

History

Oldest discoveries of human settlement date back to the Neolithic period. From the Roman period can be found in surrounding communities trails; resident at that time were Celts of the kingdom of Noricum. From the Namensgut ( farmsteads and landscape elements ) can be tapped Slavic colonization primarily for the early Middle Ages. From the colonization by the Bavarian Duke Tassilo III. found in the area in several waves large-scale deforestation instead. Ortsnamenkundlich are at least the name of Cadastral Pieslwang an indication of a Bavarian population prior to the year 1000 AD Around 1130 Steinbach is mentioned in the oldest tradition of the monastery Code Garsten first.

The area of present-day Steinbach was in the 11th century under Ottokar part of Styria Steyr. End of the 12th century Styria was then part of the Duchy of Austria under Babenberg rule. Until the 12th century was as so-called slope spur investment on or behind the site of today's church Steinbacher probably a firmament in the form of a tower or small castle. Bear testimony of names such as Postal and (on the overlying hill ) Burghub. Whether it has, however, been a simple Styrian ministerial Lien seat or whether the castle may have been a marginal attachment to the opposite Bavarian / Austrian sphere of influence, it is not clear due to lack of records. Anyway, the old gentlemen were of Grünburg ( " Popp Onen ") as the Bavarian ministerial since 1212 and Austrian ministerial, the Lords of pipe as the owner of the castles of Leon Stein, Obergrünburg and probably also of the "vicious storm " at Waldneukirchen Bavarian ministerial and since 1190 also seemed they as retinue of the Duke of Austria. Thus, at least a temporary boundary situation at the Steyr must be assumed. With the effective date of George Handfeste and the union of Austria and Styria, it can be assumed that the festivals Steinbach has lost its strategic importance and has strayed. The stones of the castle were reused after the popular tradition to build the church of the resulting map. Old stories of the people around and over the castle of Steinbach have specifically underground passages on the subject.

In addition to metalworking craft existed in Steinbach has always been a lot of farms. Before their liberation from serfdom, the peasants had to deliver ( the tenth part ) to the reign charges. One of the vestiges still the farm name Zehethof and the district name Zehetner. Manors there were many, such as Steyr, Garsten, loose stone, Pernštejna and Feyregg.

Since 1918, the town belongs to the province of Upper Austria. After the annexation of Austria to the German Reich on 13 March 1938, the town belonged to the " Upper Danube ". After 1945 the restoration of Upper Austria, where Steinbach belonged to the American occupation zone. The Russian zone of occupation was not far - east of the Enns.

Until the 1960s, iron was processed in Steinbach. In the Messererwerken that the power of the Steyr river took advantage, found himself once the center of the blade production. For economic as well as religious reasons, many masters and journeymen emigrated to the area of Solingen ( Germany ), especially in the 17th century. At the once proud hammer men, like the cutlers were also called to remember pictures of their coat of arms of some old buildings on the banks of the Steyr and along the steep high street, which connects the shore with the main square. The coat of arms of the cutlers was adopted as municipal coat of arms. At the point where the water was used for forging hammers, today is a modernized power plant in the Upper Austrian Energy AG to generate electricity.
