Stéphanos I Sidarouss

Stephanos I Cardinal Sidarouss CM ( born February 22, 1904 in Cairo, Egypt; † August 23, 1987 in Cairo ) was Patriarch of Alexandria of the Coptic Catholic Church and Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church.

Life and church career

Staphanos entered the Congregation of the Vincentians and lived in France, where he took up his studies. He was on 22 July 1939 in the Cathedral of Dax - ordained priest - Dax is the birthplace of the Founder of the Vincentians Vincent de Paul. He was from 1939-1946 students in religious seminar in Évreux and participated in the Scholastikunterricht in Dax and in Montmagny (Val -d'Oise ), in part. From 1946-1947 he was Director of the Institute of the Coptic Catholic Church in Tantah (Egypt). On 9 August 1947, he received the appointment as Titular Bishop of Sais and was appointed auxiliary bishop of Alexandria. The ordination took place on 25 January 1948 Patriarch Markos II Khouzam, who was accompanied by Alexandros Scandar, Bishop of Assiut, and Pietro Dib, Maronite Bishop of Cairo.

Patriarch of Alexandria

On May 10, 1958 Stephanos Sidarouss was elected Patriarch of Alexandria Coptic Catholic. On February 22, 1965, he was Pope Paul VI. elevated to cardinal and was christened on 25 February, the Cardinal insignia. During his tenure, he participated in the four sessions of the Second Vatican Council and was a 1978 participant in two conclaves, namely, the election of Pope John Paul I and Pope John Paul II during the Synod of Bishops of the Coptic Catholic Church in 1971, he represented the retention of celibacy for the Coptic priest.

He was principal consecrator of Bishop Yuhanna Kabe ( Auxiliary Bishop of Alexandria ), Bishop Stephanos II Ghattas, CM ( later his successor ), Bishop Athanasios Abadir ( Auxiliary Bishop of Alexandria ), Antonios Naguib (now Patriarch of Alexandria ), Bishop Yousannés Malak ( Auxiliary Bishop of Luxor ) and Bishop Elias Aghnatios Yaacoub SJ ( Bishop of Luxor ). As Mitkonsekrator he worked with ( Bishop of Luxor ), Archbishop Paul Nousseir ( Bishop of Minya ) and Bishop Yuhanna Nueir OFM ( Auxiliary Bishop of Luxor ) at the ordinations of Archbishop Isaac Ghattas.

Reasons of age, he went on 24 May 1986 papal permission to retire and was, until his death on August 23, 1987 Patriarch Emeritus of Alexandria.
