Stephen II of Croatia

Stjepan II († 1091 ) was from 1089 until his death the king of the medieval Croatian kingdom.

Life

Before his coronation he lived 15 years in Sveti Stjepan monastery (St. Stephan) near Split to " his last days " to spend there. He is the son of Častimir, who was the younger brother of King Petar Krešimir IV. He was the very last representatives of Trpimirović Dynasty.

In his notes from the year 1078 he wrote: "I Stjepan, formerly shining prince of the Herzegovinian Croats, characterized by severe illness, called to the royal ministers to find medicine for my sins. According to their advice I went to the monastery of St. Stjepan. Stjepan II remained until the death of his predecessor, King Dmitar Zvonimir in 1089, in the monastery.

Stjepan II called himself like his predecessor " the grace of God King of the Croats and Dalmatians".

King Stjepan II reigned for only two years and was a level-headed and determined ruler. He managed a number of difficulties that time to solve.
