Stephen Moulton Babcock

Stephen Moulton Babcock (* October 22, 1843 in Bridgewater, Oneida County, New York, † July 2, 1931 in Madison, Wisconsin) was an American agricultural chemist.

Babcock studied at Tufts College, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Cornell University. At the University of Göttingen in 1879 he received his doctorate in organic chemistry. In 1881 he was agricultural chemist at the New York State Agricultural Experiment Station in Geneva, New York.

In 1887 he became head of the Department of Agricultural Chemistry at the University of Wisconsin -Madison Agricultural Experiment Station ( UWAES ).

He developed in 1890 a test for determining the fat content of the milk ( Babcock test).
