Stóra Dímun

Stóra Dímun [ stɔuɹa dʊimʊn ] (Danish: Store Dimon, German: Groß- Dimun ) is the third smallest of the 18 islands of the Faroes. It belongs to the region of the island and there Sandoy to the commune of the island Skúvoy. At the same time it has the status of a Útoyggj ( outer island).

The name probably comes from the Celtic Dímun and it means two hills in allusion to the two neighboring islands large and small Dimun Dimun. Once there were up to 25 people in Dímun. The local church was decommissioned in 1922.

On Stóra Dímun graze about 400 sheep and many nesting puffins and kittiwakes. 1808 here the last Great Auk was observed in the Faeroe Islands. Riesenalken came occasionally in summer invasion birds on the Faroe Islands. His arrival was seen among trappers as a good omen for a successful hunting season.

The creation of this island and climbing the steep coast is a daring maneuver, and therefore wrong here also no ferry, but only the helicopter.

Sigmundur it was who tried to abolish the Faroe Christianized in 999 and so the principle of blood revenge.
